Kastus scholarship awarded for women in maths @ TU Dublin 2024
The School of Mathematics & Statistics is delighted to announce Nicole Jacob as the 2024 winner of the Kastus Scholarship for Women in Mathematics & Statistics at TU Dublin.
The academic year 2024/25 marks the second year of the School of Mathematics & Statistics's partnership with Kastus to offer the Kastus Scholarship for Women in Mathematics & Statistics. The scholarship was very successful in 2023/24 and you can read about the experience of the first recipient, Megan, here.
The 2024 Kastus scholar, Nicole Jacob, is a second-year student of our BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences programme and, in her application, reflected on the challenges faced by women in pursuing STEM subjects, her inspirations and motivation in pursuing mathematics. She currently helps others with their mathematics and hopes her experiences benefit and inspire other students. On learning of her success, she commented:
I think this scholarship is a great opportunity for women on our course and in general ... stem subjects are for everyone.
The scholarship underscores the School's commitment to gender equality and the School of Mathematics & Statistics is delighted that Kastus has generously continued its funding of this scheme. The scholarship supports young women studying mathematics and statistics at TU Dublin. It provides a financial award to help them in their studies and allow them to focus on their ambitions and enjoyment of mathematics and statistics. Each Kastus scholar becomes a champion and role model for women in STEM (and mathematics, in particular), emphasising that mathematics is for everyone and that mathematics and statistics are made stronger by the diversity of those who participate.
The School of Mathematics & Statistics has been recognised for its commitment to gender equality through the award of a Athena Swan Bronze Award in 2022 and is delighted to have the support of Kastus in its work to ensure equality, diversity and inclusion throughout mathematics and statistics and to highlight the importance of women's contribution to these disciplines and the opportunities for the next generation of women.
