Stephen Tiernan has been a lecturer and researcher at TU Dublin Tallaght Campus (formerly Institute of Technology Tallaght) since 2000. In the last 10 years he has focused his research interests on Bioengineering, in particular spinal research and concussion. His current work involves measuring the frequency and severity of head impacts in contact sports using an instrumented mouthguard. These impacts are then simulated to determine brain distortion and results are correlated with any head injuries sustained. This research is in collaboration with Colin Doherty (St James Hospital), Matt Cambell (Trinity College Dublin) and David Camarillo (Stanford University). This joint project is unique in that it measures head impacts in vivo in an unhelmeted sport (Mixed Martial Arts) and correlates brain distortion with blood brain barrier disruption.
Prior to joining the college in Tallaght he, lectured in Dundalk Institute of Technology, worked with University College Dublin on research and development projects for SME’s in Ireland and worked as a structures test engineer with British Aerospace.
