Dr Philip Purcell is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Technological University Dublin. Dr Purcell’s PhD research investigated the treatment of vertebral compression fractures using balloon kyphoplasty and was funded by the Irish Research Council’s EMBARK award. This research was completed in collaboration with consultant orthopaedic surgeon Professor Seamus Morris (Mater Misericordiae University Hospital) and Dr Magdalena Tyndyk (University College Cork). Within the first year of his PhD Philip completed a certificate in Medical Science from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was awarded the ‘Young Engineers Research Paper Prize 2012’ by Engineers Ireland. He subsequently became a Chartered member of Engineers Ireland in 2017. His ongoing research interests involve the application of finite element modelling to evaluate orthopaedic treatments of the spine. Prior to lecturing Dr Purcell developed a broad range of industrial experience with CADFEM Ireland (simulation consultancy, training and technical support), RVL Group in the UK (specialist aviation services) and CEMEX Ireland (construction).
