Dr. John Power was appointed College Lecturer in Forensic Science, TU Dublin,Tallaght campus in 2020 after taking early retirement from Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) where he worked from 1990 to 2020. His main research interest is in the analysis of illicit substances, with a special interest in amphetamines and cathinones. His research interests come from his career as Head of the Controlled Drugs team and his earlier roles in in the Toxicology and Chemistry areas of FSI.
John has worked fulltime since 1978 in various scientific and management roles (as technician, roles in the Equine Forensic Labs, and TCD). He obtained all his academic qualifications whilst working, graduating with an MSc and most recently when he completed a PhD in 2017.
He has represented Ireland at the European Centre for the Monitoring of Drugs and Drug Addiction. He was a committee member of the Drugs Working Group European Network of Forensic Science Institutes.
He is a member of a research group based in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Trinity College Dublin.
