Dr Cornally completed her PhD in 2007. Her project focused on the characterisation of aldehyde reducing enzymes which contribute to the pathogenesis of cancer-causing bacteria, Helicobacter pylori. Dr Cornally transitioned from academic research to research and development in industry, specialising in in vitro diagnostics. Her primary role in DiaSorin was to determine the feasibility of applying loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) DNA technology to viral detection and quantification. Dr Cornally was directly involved in the transfer of this technology to their R&D facilities in Ireland, where she played a crucial role in establishing the molecular diagnostic laboratory.
Dr Cornally joined TU Dublin, Tallaght, in 2012 and is currently the Principal Investigator for two PhD projects which she co-supervises with her research partner, Dr Luke McGuigan. The primary focus of these projects is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and the genomic discrimination between high-risk and low-risk types. Furthermore, the group is also investigating the association of high-risk HPV types with cervical cancer development.
Key Research Interests - Human Papillomavirus, Isothermal DNA Technology, Cervical Cancer.
