Dr. Brian A. Murray, MRSC, CChem, CSci, FICI, Lecturer in Physical Chemistry, completed his MSc & PhD in University College Dublin under Professor Rory More O’Ferrall. After Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dublin City University & Trinity College Dublin, he returned to UCD as Syntex Newman Scholar, an Independent Postdoctoral post which allowed him develop his own research in Supramolecular Chemistry, including a sabbatical to the laboratory of Professor Jules Rebek at MIT.
A lecturer in TU Dublin – Tallaght Campus since 1993, he has taught at all levels & modes (full-time, part-time, & industry-focused courses), acting as Course Leader for Year 4 of Honours Degrees in Applied Chemistry & in Pharmaceutical Science, including the Nanjing Tech University-TU Dublin Joint Programme 2011-20. He has served on TU Dublin’s Academic Council for 20 years.
He has been Supervisor to a Postdoctoral Fellow, 9 PhD & 3 MSc students, & has 101 publications covering Journal & Conference papers, Invited Lectures, & Reviews including “Reactions of Aldehydes & Ketones”, an Annual Chapter in “Organic Reaction Mechanisms” since 1995. He has raised over €0.5 M in individual research funding, & helped raise €9.3 M as part of larger collaborations. He has served as External Examiner for several colleges, & referee for several journals, and as a Foreign Expert for Poland’s Science Funding programme.
He manages Tallaght’s Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) laboratory equipped with 500 & 300 MHz spectrometers, & founded “NMRics” (NMR institute centre for spectroscopy, one of our first Institute Research Centres) as well as an NMR service to industry & colleges without their own NMR. He organizes Training Courses in Spectroscopy for Lecturers & Postgraduate Researchers.
