Shannon Chance is Lecturer and Programme Chair of the BSc (Hons) course in BIM (Digital Construction) at Technological University Dublin. Shannon is a LEED-Accredited Professional, licensed to practice architecture in the United States. In 2014, she was awarded the rank of Full Professor of Architecture by Hampton University. Shannon holds bachelors and master’s degrees in architecture from Virginia Tech and a PhD in Higher Education from William and Mary in Virginia.
Shannon worked at TU Dublin as a Fulbright Fellow (2012-2013) and Marie Curie Research Fellow (2014-2016) before joining the university’s permanent staff. She has secured numerous grants and contracts during her time on staff, including a second Marie Curie Research Fellowship, to UCL (2018-2020). UCL appointed her Visiting Professor (2017-present), and she was also named Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in the UK (2019).
Shannon is recognized as a leader in engineering education research (EER), having Chaired the global Research in Engineering Education Network, diversified and expanded its Governing Body, and implemented noteworthy programs such as a workshop series for people new to EER. She has served as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Education. She was recently recruited to serve as Deputy Editor of the European Journal of Engineering Education. She has guest edited three special focus issues since 2018. In addition, she has published 17 journal articles, 69 peer-reviewed conference papers, and 10 book chapters. She has secured grants and contracts totaling €1.09M ($1.2M) and has served as co-investigator or co-author on other funded projects.
Shannon’s teaching integrates ethics and sustainability. Her research uses a wide variety of methods to answer questions related to student experience, equity and diversity, teacher experience, strategic planning, and change management. She also investigates how civil engineers and architects understand and enact design, knowledge creation, ethics, and sustainability.
