Fiacra McDonnell graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Construction Economics (QS) from DIT / Trinty College Dublin in 1994. He started his career with Hanscomb Associates in New York, before moving to London in 1996 where he worked as a Quantity Surveyor with J Browne Construction and then McNicholas Plc. Fiacra returned to Ireland in 1999 and worked as senior QS with main contractors: JF Supple Ltd in Cork and P Elliott in Cavan. He became director of surveying with Aiden Elliott Construction in 2006.

Fiacra became a full-time lecturer in 2009 in the School of Surveying & Construction Management in TU Dublin and obtained a MA in Higher Education in 2013, and a MSc in BIM & Integrated Design in 2016. He lectures on various modules specialising in measurement and commercial management. He acts as an APC assessor for Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland, and as an external examiner for Dundalk IT & TUS. He also acts as an interviewer for the Public Appointments Service.

His research interests include quantification and costing within the quantity surveying discipline and is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education at Trinity College Dublin.
