Fellow IEEE, PhD in Antennas and Propagation (Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland)
Dr Max Ammann is Professor of Antennas & Propagation in Technological University Dublin’s School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and is the director of the Antennas & High Frequency Research Centre. He received his PhD in antennas and propagation from Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland in 1997. A Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers since 1996, he was elevated to Fellow in 2019 for contributions to compact antennas for wideband wireless applications.
He joined the TU Dublin in 1986 following eight years of radio systems engineering and antenna design with TCL/Philips Radio Communications Systems in Dublin, where he was responsible for commissioning the Nationwide Communications Network for An Garda Síochána. He was appointed a senior lecturer in 2003, professor in 2012 and assistant Head of School in 2015.
His research interests broadly include electromagnetic theory, antenna miniaturisation for terminal and ultra-wideband applications, antennas for medical devices and antenna issues relating to privacy. He has served as an expert to industry on various antenna technologies in the communications, medical, aviation and electronic security sectors in Ireland and abroad. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed papers published in journals and international conferences. Dr Ammann’s team received 13 best paper awards at international conferences on Antennas and Propagation and seven commercialisation awards.
He sat on the management committee of the EU COST Action IC1102, “Versatile, Integrated, and Signal-aware Technologies for Antennas” (VISTA) and EU ASSIST. As a member of the IEEE International Committee for Electromagnetic Safety, TC95, he participates in the revision of the IEEE Standard for Safety Levels with Respect to Human Exposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields, 3 kHz to 300 GHz.
He has chaired and organised special sessions on small antennas, UWB antennas and UWB Wireless Communication Systems at EuCAP and IEEE APS and chaired the Antennas and Propagation Track for the 65th IEEE VTC, Dublin 2007. He was the local chair for the October 2008 EU COST IC0603 workshop and meeting in Dublin. He co-chaired an IEEE Workshop on Wearable and Implantable
Antennas and Propagation in Belfast, 2017. He acted as Associate Editor for the IEEE Antennas & Wireless Propagation Letters (2012-2018).
