Éadaoin is a recent graduate of TU Dublin’s MSc in Human Resource Management, where she discovered a passion for the field of health and well-being in the workplace. The focus of her MSc research project was on the well-being of academic library workers within Ireland. This involved the first study of its kind in this population, taking a comprehensive look at the status of well-being in these workers.

Éadaoin is now a PhD researcher in the School of Management, People and Organisations, continuing her focus on workplace well-being. In 2023, she was awarded an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship for her PhD project Wellwashing: An exploration of workplace well-being practices in the Irish tech sector.

This project aims to investigate the emerging concept of well-being washing, through examining the experiences of tech workers in Ireland, the intentions of their employers, and the perspectives of workplace well-being service providers. The terms ‘wellwashing’ or ‘well-being washing’ have been used in media and practitioner discussion to describe the actions of organisations that appear to invest in improving the well-being of their employees, while their employees do not experience much benefit, with little to no improvement in their well-being.

As there has been little research on the concept of well-being washing, the aim of Éadaoin’s project is to establish an academic construct and understanding of it. This will contribute to a significant gap in the literature and pave the way for new debate and research in a field that has the potential to greatly impact the lives of workers. The project is also exploring a gap in knowledge on tech workers in Ireland and will contribute to practice by recommending how to better protect health and well-being at work and move towards a more sustainable idea of well-being in the workplace.
