Research in Climate Action Award Winner - Professor Patrick Goodman
TU Dublin celebrated excellence in Research and Innovation at the inaugural awards ceremony held last November, 2023 recognising the incredible impact of the university’s research and innovation community.
Winner of the 'Research in Climate Action,' Award - Professor Patrick Goodman is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Physics, Clinical Measurement and Optometric Sciences at TU Dublin.
Pat Graduated with an Honours BSC in Experimental Physics in UCD in 1984 and completed a Research Masters in UCD in Atmospheric Physics in 1986. He trained and qualified as a Meteorologist with Met Eireann, working there until 1989 when he joined TU Dublin as a lecturer. Pat completed a PhD in the area of air pollution and Health from Trinity in 2000 and was awarded a Fellowship of the Institute of Physics in 2003 and a Professorship by TU Dublin in 2009.
Speaking about the nomination and award win, Pat said:
"Research should all be about making an impact, so seeing your work cited and referenced as an example of how a positive improvement in the environment and quality of life, makes me feel I have achieved a positive impact and served as an example to others. .”
Providing a brief background on his research career to date, Pat showcased highlights of the significant impact in Research and Innovation in TU Dublin.
2000-2010 Visiting researcher, Harvard School of Public Health (Summer periods)
2002 Published PhD work in the Lancet
2003 (November) Irish Doctors Awards. Overall award excellence in Medical research, for best Medical research paper for 2002/2003 by Irish Authors. (Lancet, Clancy, Goodman et al 2002) Also awarded for the best Respiratory research paper for the same work.
2005 First postgrad student successfully completed their studies (approx. 45 postgrads now supervised to completion)
2006 Irish Doctors awards, award for best research paper in IJMS (see McCaffrey et al 2006 smoking ban)
2007 (November) Winner of the Irish Doctors awards, for excellence in Medical Research in the Respiratory category for AMJRCCM paper Goodman et al 2007, smoking ban
2007 AMJRCCM paper featured in New York Times
2008 European Respiratory Society, Award for best published paper in 2007 by European authors in the area of occupational Medicine and Epidemiology for the AJRCCM Goodman et al 2007 paper (smoking ban).
2009 Awarded Professorship by TU Dublin Institute of Technology
2010-ongoing Expert advisor/contributor to reports/policy at EU and WHO Europe (Air Quality)
2012-2015 member of the working group on the successful PRTLI funding for the ESHI/Greenway hub building in TUDublin
2013 Invited expert at the USEPA
2019 Invited to meet with the EU Chief Science advisors on EASAC report on Climate Change and health.
2019 Key note speaker Estonia (EASAC) hosted by the prime minister.
2022 Received €1.1M for a mobile Air quality Laboratory (MARL) SFI
2023 Recipient of TU Dublin Research & Innovation Award.
