Meet the Scientist Webinar Series: TU Dublin’s Dr Lorraine D’Arcy Inspires Young Minds
The latest instalment of the Meet the Scientist Webinar Series took place on March 5th, 2025, featuring Dr Lorraine D’Arcy (Sustainability Action Research and Innovation Lead), from TU Dublin. The webinar, titled 'How do engineers choose the best transport for our neighbourhoods? Could their choices affect our health?’, captivated the interest of 2,306 primary school students across the country, offering them a unique opportunity to engage in a thought-provoking discussion on transport, urban planning, and health.
During the webinar, Dr D’Arcy explained how engineers and urban planners make critical decisions about transport infrastructure, emphasising the significant impact these choices have on public health. She explored the connections between street design, neighbourhood planning, social determinants, and mobility behaviours, highlighting the role of sustainable and active transport in promoting healthier communities.
The session was highly interactive, with students submitting questions and insights about urban transport challenges and the role of engineering in creating liveable, walkable communities. Dr D’Arcy encouraged students to think critically about their surroundings and consider how urban design influences their daily lives and well-being. The webinar succeeded in sparking curiosity and enthusiasm among young students about the role of engineering in shaping sustainable and healthy communities. Through her engaging presentation, Dr D’Arcy not only educated but also inspired the next generation to think about innovative solutions for a healthier and more sustainable future.
The Meet the Scientist Webinar Series continues to be an invaluable platform for connecting young minds with leading experts, fostering a deeper understanding of science, engineering, and sustainability.
