Advancing Engineering Ethics Education: TU Dublin’s Professor Shannon Chance Launches New Handbook
The Routledge International Handbook of Engineering Ethics Education, edited by Professor Shannon Chance from TU Dublin, is set to launch on December 4th, 2024. This comprehensive, open-access guide features contributions from 105 global experts, offering innovative approaches to integrating ethics into engineering curricula. The handbook includes discussions on teaching methodologies, interdisciplinary perspectives, and accreditation. The handbook was developed by the Ethics Special Interest Group (SIG) of the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI). SEFI members facilitated the project through their wide-reaching transcontinental networks. Professor Chance currently represents TU Dublin on SEFI’s Board of Directors, and one of her co-editors, Dr Diana Martin, who earned her PhD at TU Dublin in 2020, chairs SEFI’s Ethics SIG.
Professor Shannon Chance, editor of the handbook, commented:
As an engineering and built environment educator involved with the European University of Technology (EUt+) and its EthiCo project, I’ve observed the pressing need for resources to help integrate ethics into teaching. By providing diverse perspectives and innovative teaching methodologies, the book’s six editors and 105 hope to empower educators to inspire future engineers to think critically and ethically about the complex issues they will face in their careers – and to inspire researchers to join us in advancing ethics education. Our community welcomes newcomers and wants to support teachers interested in mastering new approaches.
The Routledge International Handbook of Engineering Ethics Education provides valuable insights into a range of topics, including teaching methodologies, interdisciplinary perspectives, and accreditation.
- Foundations of engineering ethics education
- Interdisciplinary contributions to ethics education
- Ethical issues across engineering disciplines
- Teaching methods in ethics education
- Assessment in ethics education
- Accreditation in engineering ethics education
In addition to Shannon Chance (TU Dublin) and Diana Adela Martin (TU Dublin and UCL), the editorial team also includes Tom Børsen (Aalborg University), Roland Tormey (EPFL), Thomas Taro Lennerfors (Uppsala University), and Gunter Bombaert (TU Eindhoven). Together, they have curated a resource that reflects the latest thinking and approaches in engineering ethics education. The handbook is available for free download from the Routledge website, and the print version will ship on December 4th, 2024. Educators, students, and professionals are invited to explore this vital resource that seeks to shape the future of engineering education.
For more information, please visit Routledge Handbook Website or contact shannon.chance@tudublin.ie. Shannon and Diana are both available to support educators by providing workshops and presentations on any aspect of the handbook and how to use it.
Interested educators may also consider participating in the TU Dublin-hosted SEFI Ethics Spring Symposium, to be held 24th-26th March 2025 in Dún Laoghaire on the theme ‘Growing the Field of Engineering Ethics Education and Research as a Community.’
