Neurodiversity Week (17 - 23 March)
Goals of Neurodiversity Week:
- Celebrate and embrace neurodiverse individuals in education and the workplace.
- Raise awareness about Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and other neurodivergent conditions.
- Promote inclusive teaching, learning, and working environments.
- Encourage discussions on barriers, strengths, and support for neurodivergent students and staff.
Neurodiversity in Third-Level Education
Definition: Neurodiversity in higher education refers to the recognition and support of students with neurological differences such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and other cognitive variations.
Why It Matters:
- Increases inclusivity and accessibility for all students.
- Recognizes that diverse learning styles enhance the educational environment.
- Reduces barriers that may impact academic success for neurodivergent students.
Challenges Faced by Neurodivergent Students
- Sensory Overload: Busy classrooms, bright lights, and loud environments can be overwhelming.
- Executive Functioning Difficulties: Challenges with organization, time management, and prioritizing assignments.
- Social Interaction & Group Work: Difficulty understanding social cues, forming connections, or participating in teamwork.
- Processing Differences: Reading, writing, or verbal communication may require additional time or alternative methods.
- Mental Health & Burnout: Increased risk of stress, anxiety, and exhaustion due to academic and social pressures.
Support Strategies for Neurodivergent Students
Academic Accommodations:
- Extra time for exams, access to lecture recordings, and quiet study spaces.
- Assistive technology (e.g., speech-to-text, note-taking software).
- Flexible deadlines where possible.
Inclusive Teaching Methods:
- Clear and structured course materials.
- Providing instructions in multiple formats (written, visual, verbal).
- Alternative assessment methods (e.g., presentations instead of written exams).
Student Support Services:
- Disability support provides assistance for neurodivergent students.
- Autism Coordinator Garry Toner provides individual supports.
- Access to mentorship, peer support, and tutoring.
- Well-being and mental health services tailored for neurodivergent needs.
Social & Community Inclusion:
- Creating neurodiverse-friendly student societies and safe spaces.
