TU Dublin Smarter Travel Survey 2024

Published: 21 Oct, 2024

TU Dublin’s bi-annual Smarter Travel Student and Staff survey is one of the most important activities of the Transport for Ireland Smarter Travel programme – this year the survey will run between the 06 and 26 of November and we encourage all our people to take part. The survey is designed in a multiple-choice format and takes just 10-minutes to complete. All survey participants can enter into a draw to win some of many high value, weekly prizes, which we hope support students and staff to make, or continue, sustainable travel journeys.

This survey is conducted nationally across campuses in Ireland and informs the National Transport Authority, local authorities and TU Dublin of how we travel to campus and the reasons for our modal choices. This data is really important for the University to support our people to make more sustainable choices and to identify barriers to sustainable travel.

In 2022, the NTA noted that TU Dublin had the highest response rate of any campus for as long as the survey has been running and this year we are aiming for a full university response. Some of the key data findings from our 2022 survey showed that 89% of students travelled to campus by sustainable travel, and an impressive 16% of staff arrive to campus by bike. However its important to note that 54% said that personal safety and security influenced their travel decisions and this is critical for the university to understand so that we can advocate for better and safer connections to our campuses.

As Ireland’s second largest University, TU Dublin is one of the largest journey-generators to a Higher Education Institution in Dublin, with over 28,000 students and over 3,500 members of staff working or studying between our campuses. The University is progressing plans to develop high quality campus environments which promote healthy and active lifestyles while offering transport and mobility choices for the University community in conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA), local authorities and other statutory authorities. The data from this survey is key to the success of our plans; Campus & Estates have recently installed seven new bike maintenance stands across TU Dublin campuses, with funding from the NTA Active Travel infrastructure fund, and plans are in progress to develop high quality secure bike parking units at Blanchardstown, Grangegorman and Tallaght campuses.
