Making Artworld/s - A Solo Exhibition by Dr Tommie Soro, 01 - 10 February 2025
Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) is delighted to announce Making Artworld/s, a solo exhibition by Dr Tommie Soro, an artist and Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow at TU Dublin, from 1 to 10 February 2025 at TØN Gallery in Temple Bar. This captivating exhibition of printworks delves into the artist’s exploration of the reputational economy within the art world, inviting audiences to reflect on the shared yet intangible knowledge that shapes this unique imagined community.
The exhibition showcases:
- A Screen-Printed Map: Inspired by the world-making efforts of the Dutch East India Company, this piece interrogates systemic hierarchies between practices and institutions within the art world.
- Darkly Humorous Etchings: Drawing on Francisco Goya's satirical and evocative imagery, these etchings reflect the challenges artists face while navigating the opaque structures of the art world.
Artworld Reputation in the Digital Age (TBGS, 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin 2, D02 AC84)
On Saturday, 1 February (12am-4.30pm), the exhibition will be complemented by a public programme of talks titled Artworld Reputation in the Digital Age, featuring distinguished speakers:
- Bill Deresiewicz: Author of The Death of the Artist, examining the precarities and reinventions of artistic identity in the platform economy.
- Prof. Mick Wilson: Professor at Gothenburg University, discussing the evolution of institutional critique in digital contexts.
- Prof. Gregory Sholette: Professor at Queens University and author of Dark Matter, reflecting on cultural labour and the hidden networks of artworld hierarchies.
- Prof. Andrea Phillips: Professor at Northumbria University and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, exploring how art markets and public exhibitions create value in the digital era.
This compelling combination of visual art and intellectual discourse offers a thought-provoking exploration of the intersections between cultural theory, artistic practice, and the shared fictions that sustain the art world.
