Dr Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire and Dr Dorothy Cashman Win An Post Irish Book Award
Dr Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire and Dr Dorothy Cashman are among the winning authors at this year's An Post Irish Book Awards, held in the Convention Centre, Dublin on Wednesday. Now in its 19th year, the An Post Irish Book Awards celebrate and promote Irish writing to the widest range of readers possible. Each year, the An Post Irish Book Awards bring together a vast community passionate about books – readers, authors, booksellers, publishers and librarians – to recognise the very best of new and established Irish writing talent.
The winning book, Irish Food History: A Companion, takes the reader on an unforgettable and expert journey through Ireland's culinary past. Edited by Dr Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire of the School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology and graduate Dr Dorothy Cashman, the book also features contributions from colleagues Dr Elaine Mahon, Dr Brian J. Murphy, Margaret Connolly, Fionnán O' Connor, a current PhD candidate, and PhD graduates Dr Tara McConnell and Dr John D. Mulcahy. Beautifully designed by Brenda Dermody from the School of Art and Design, this volume is richly illustrated and interspersed with folklore, songs, recipes, and food-related poetry from Seamus Heaney, Paula Meehan, and Raiftearaí.
Speaking about the award, Dr Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, said, "Dorothy and I are absolutely thrilled to receive this award, which we accepted on behalf of the incredible contributors, our talented designer Brenda Dermody, and the outstanding teams at the EUt+ Academic Press and the Royal Irish Academy who made this achievement possible. The book is available for open access download at this link."
