TU Dublin wins Five National Student Media Awards
Students from TU Dublin's School of Media took home five awards at the 2023 ISIC National Student Media Awards (SMEDIAs), an annual All-Ireland student competition run by the Oxygen.ie website. The awards have been labelled 'Ireland's premier student awards', celebrating the achievements of students in media disciplines in Ireland. The awards took place on 20 April in Dublin's Aviva Stadium, with TU Dublin students bringing home the following awards:
- Radio Production of the Year - Arts and Features: Taking the Helm: Aboard Life's Boat – Patrick Kidd
- Film Documentary of the Year: True Wind – Molly Kiely
- Radio Documentary of the Year: Boogies Last Dance – Eoin Glackin
- Radio Production of the Year - News and Current Affairs: Eoin Glackin
- EPA Award for Journalism Relating to the Environment: Jordan Dempsey
Molly Kiely, currently completing her BA in Film and Broadcasting, won for her documentary about 29-year-old Leonie from landlocked Kildare who, after sailing for the first time three years ago, has set her sights on a new challenge: to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. The film is set in Kinsale, where Leonie lives on a small sailboat with her boyfriend as she prepares for the dangerous voyage ahead. Mollie said: 'The film aims to highlight the challenges of pursuing one's dreams and the strength and courage needed to overcome them.'
