Seminar - Disability, Equality and Media: Questions of Representation
The School of Media and the Centre for Critical Media Literacy at TU Dublin is hosting a seminar on how intellectual disability, care and the meaning of freedom are represented in media.
Chaired by Professor Yvonne Galligan, Director of Equality Diversity Inclusion at TU Dublin, the main speaker is Stacy Clifford Simplican, a Senior Lecturer in Gender and Sexuality Studies from Vanderbilt University, USA.
The event will examine how intellectual disability, care and the meaning of freedom are represented in media that range from training videos for support professionals to Hollywood movies such as The Peanut Butter Falcon. And Ms Clifford will ask how feminism can help us understand meaning and engagement in encounters when people with severe and profound disabilities may not exercise obvious choice and control. Stacy Clifford Simplican is the author of The Capacity Contract: Intellectual Disability and the Question of Citizenship (2015), which challenges ideas of democratic participation that place cognitive capacity at their centre – in favour of an emancipatory vision that sees democracy advanced through action that is accessible to all.
In addition, Chris Byrne, Tomás Murphy and Margaret Turley will present their new research on the depiction in Irish media of educational issues for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They will also share previous work, done in cooperation with Inclusion Ireland, on experiences of the Covid-19 crisis for adults with intellectual disabilities.
