International and Second Level Students Attend Internet of Things Workshop in Grangegorman
The Internet of Things (IoT) continues to gain traction as a means of democratising electronic engineering and making embedded technology accessible to a wider audience.
The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is helping with this democratisation process and last month, the School ran a one day IoT workshop. Attending the workshop was a large group of transition year students from Colaiste Choilm Swords and visiting second-level students from Biskupske Gymnazium, Brno in the Czech Republic and from Banús Institute, Barcelona in Spain. In addition, the three schools are involved in an ERASMUS project to encourage second-level students across Europe collaborate on IoT projects.
The workshop was led by Frank Duignan, who was assisted by Michael Core, Paula Kelly and Dr Damom Berry. During the workshop, the ERASMUS students learned to develop a responsive end-to-end IoT sensing system using BBC Microbits, the Python programming language and the If This Then That (IFTTT) web service. The workshop is a return to form as it is the first practical in-house STEM workshop to be run by the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering since the beginning of the COVID crisis.
