Published: 13 Sep, 2022

Applications for the 1916 Bursary Fund 2022-23 across 24 participating higher education institutions open today and close at 5pm Thursday, 20 October 2022.

Applications must be made online through participating colleges. Full details and guidelines on applying are available at the new website www.1916Bursary.ie. The 1916 Bursary is a financial award funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) for first-time students that are under-represented in higher education.

To qualify, students need to meet specific criteria, including being a member of one or more of the Bursary priority groups outlined in the National Access Plan 2022-2028, qualifying for the special rate of the SUSI grant or showing their household income was less than 24,500 euro in 2021 and entry into college.

Students eligible for the Bursary will be awarded under one of three tiers.

  • Tier 1: €5,000 per annum. In 2022, Tier 1 Bursaries will be awarded to a total of 253 new entrant undergraduate students for the duration of their studies.
  • Tier 2: €2,000 per annum. In 2022, Tier 2 Bursaries were awarded to a total of 121 new entrant undergraduate students for the duration of their studies. Tier 2 Bursaries will be awarded to applicants who meet the criteria for the 1916 Bursary but who did not ultimately qualify for a Tier 1 bursary.
  • Tier 3: Once-Off Bursary (€1,500 payable for 2022/23 academic year only). The number of Tier 3 bursaries to be paid will depend on the remaining funding available to each cluster following the allocation of Tier 1 and 2 bursaries (including for continuing students and students progressing to postgraduate study).

In 2022, the 1916 Bursary increased the number of 5,000 euro awards by an additional 25% and expanded the priority groups eligible to apply.
