TU Dublin Fine Art Graduate Awarded Temple Bar Gallery + Studios Recent Graduate Residency 2021
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios has announced that Michelle Malone is the recipient of the Recent Graduate Residency 2021.
Michelle Malone graduated from the School of Creative Arts at TU Dublin with a Fine Art BA in 2020 and is also currently undertaking her MA at TU Dublin. In autumn 2020, she self-organised a substantial solo exhibition of her graduate work at The Complex, Dublin. She was also the recipient of the Whyte’s Award at the RDS Visual Arts Awards 2020 and the Fire Station Artists’ Studio Graduate Award 2020.
Michelle Malone’s multidisciplinary practice incorporates sculpture, image-making, audio, and creative writing to create immersive and distinct installations. Using pop culture iconography relating to childhood and adolescent memory, as well as family and peer storytelling, Malone presents an autobiographical narrative of growing up in a socioeconomically disadvantaged urban area. Drawing from the authenticity of lived experience, Malone’s work establishes a platform for discussions about class, taste, belonging, identity, and community.
Michelle describes the positive impact the award will have on her artistic practice: “As my current practice is based on growing up in a variety of social housing systems mainly in inner-city Dublin, the Recent Graduate Residency means I will benefit from being in close proximity to my research areas. Being part of TBG+S will allow me to engage with professional artists that I admire, and it will provide a sense of security for the development of my practice through the year-long occupancy. The residency also means that I will have access to a variety of institutional supports at a crucial point in time as I transition from student to professional artist. Ultimately I believe the residency will encourage engagement with a wider art community, and it will serve as a supportive environment to develop my studio practice.”
The Temple Bar Gallery + Studios Recent Graduate Residency is a professional development opportunity aimed at recent graduate artists in Ireland to assist in focusing their studio practices at this crucial point in their careers. Now in its seventh year, the Residency offers a large free studio for one year, a €2,000 stipend, €500 travel bursary, and a variety of institutional supports. More information is available here.
