TU Dublin Reveals a World of Opportunity for Students at Career and Employer Engagement Events
Throughout Semester One, the Career Development Centre at TU Dublin hosted events/seminars for students across many disciplines covering the variety of careers that are on offer both in Ireland and across the globe.
While the pandemic has affected the University's ability to host on-campus employer fairs/events, the team has been working harder than ever to make sure that TU Dublin students stay connected with employers!
In October this year, they ran three highly successful Virtual Career Fairs in the areas of 'Business, IT Law & Languages' (14th Oct), 'Construction & Engineering' (21st Oct) and 'Engineering & Science' (22nd Oct). These fairs attracted over 80 high-profile graduate employers and these employers held over 1,400 one to one meetings, discussing graduate placement and summer opportunities with close to 700 highly motivated students!
In November, the team also hosted a Careers Fair for the School of Hospitality Management & Tourism and the School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology. Just under 900 participants attended a total of 23 sessions over two days. Alongside presentations from IBEC's Going Global Programme and Irish Distiller's Jameson International Graduate Programme, recruiters from Greece to the USA sought to attract the University's brightest and best. Crowe Ireland, Le Meridien, Silver Hill Duck and Bretzel Bakery also featured with Gina Murphy of Hugo's giving students amazing insights into the cut and thrust of sustaining a business through recessions and a global pandemic.
The event was peppered with 15 minutes 'Top Tips' sessions on topics from 'Staying focused in your career' to 'Rock your network on LinkedIn whilst representatives from TU Dublin Hothouse spoke about start-ups and further study options. The success of the two days was further sealed by Emmy award-winning, ex-CNN news anchor Gina London's motivational session 'Creating winning connections in your career'.
The Career Development Centre Team has also been active in engaging with employers, arranging and promoting employer webinars, virtual careers events and opportunities to our students. They also supported and promoted the GradIreland Graduate Careers Fair at the end of September while many students signed up to Jobscene' Jobs Board to receive daily and weekly job alerts.
Besides, Careers Coaches have been running regular targeted career development workshops, shorter career webinars and CV/Quick Query Clinics for students across all programmes, particularly for final-year and placement students. Topics have included:
- Job-hunting during COVID/Challenging Times
- Making great applications / CV Preparation
- Enhancing interview performance
- Exploring career options with your course
- Postgrad/Further Study
- Building networks/LinkedIn
- Making effective career decisions
- Preparing for Virtual Fairs!
