Dr Jason Gavin trained as a pharmacist in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences at Trinity College Dublin. After 5 years of international experience in clinical (hospital) pharmacy, he returned to academia to complete a PhD under Prof. John Gilmer. His research focused on the chemical biology of azo-based prodrugs and their bacterial metabolism, and how their chemical structure affects prodrug activation and food safety. His drug discovery research into analogs of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) led to a patent application, commercialisation funding, and continued research into the mechanisms of action of lead compounds and their potential to treat liver diseases.
After receiving his PhD, Jason worked as a drug safety assessor at the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA). He went on to work with the European Commission's Directorate for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), consulting on the design of cross-border telemedicine tools for rare diseases, cross-border eHealth infrastructure and the EU-Substance Registration System (EU-SRS). He sat on the steering group and led the business analysis team for the EU medical device safety database (EUDAMED). He worked as senior digital health consultant with S3 Connected Health, providing project leadership and digital strategy services for major global pharma, life science and medtech partners.
Jason has postgraduate qualifications in business studies (DBS), clinical pharmacy (QUB) and statistics (TCD), and received an MBA from the UCD Smurfit Graduate Business School in 2020.
