Bio
Dr Emma Caraher is a lecturer in biopharmaceutical sciences at the School of Chemical and BioPharmaceutical Sciences at TU Dublin. She completed her PhD in 1998 in University College Dublin under the supervision of Dr Philip Newsholme. Following this she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and Health Canada, investigating the dietary effects of food on pancreatic beta cells and gut inflammation. Emma joined TU Dublin (formerly IT Tallaght) in 2003 as a postdoctoral researcher examining the mechanisms of biofilm formation and development and the implications of biofilms for CF patients. In 2008 she secured a SFI funded Stokes Lectureship enabling her to continue investigating the virulence of bacterial CF pathogens, in particular antibiotic resistance mechanisms of bacterial biofilms.
Emma is the Programme Chair for Applied Biology (TU651), Bioanalysis (TU760) and Bioanalytical Science (TU887). She is also Co-Lead of the Centre for Microbial Host Interactions
Key research interests: Microbial biofilms, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, host pathogen interactions, alternative antimicrobial therapies
