Biography
I graduated from my PhD degree at the Applied Optics Group, National University Ireland, Galway (NUIG) in August 2012. My research project was titled "Eye modelling for personalised intraocular lens design" and my PhD supervisor was Dr Alexander Goncharov. This work involved a collaboration with Abbott Medical Optics in Groningen and the University Medical Centre Groningen. I would like to gratefully acknowledge my research funding bodies Enterprise Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland.
I completed my MPhil degree by research at the Optometry Department, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in 2008. My research topic involved the design and assembly of a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor for the eye. My thesis was titled "Ocular aberrations wavefront sensor in clinical application" and my research was supervised by Dr Veronica O'Dwyer, Dr Brenda McGrath, and Professor Vincent Toal. This work also involved a collaboration with Professor Chris Dainty's Applied Optics group at NUIG.
Previously, I received a Bachelor in Applied Science (Optometry) from the School of Optometry (now the School of Optometry and Vision Science) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 2000.
I have worked for several years within most types of optometry practices including; rural Australia, metropolitan Australia, metropolitan Ireland, independent practices, multiples/corporate practices, in teaching/supervising clinical roles (QUT and TU Dublin), and as a clinical assistant in ophthalmology practices. My current research interests are in areas of medical instrumentation (particularly optical) and medical devices (particularly optical).
