Undergraduate Research Projects Showcased at SURE2023

Published: 16 Oct, 2023

Congratulations to our recent graduates: Caitríona McGearty [from BSc (Hons) Nutraceuticals in Health & Nutrition, TU882] and Thasmin Shahjahan [from BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Healthcare, TU875] who presented their final year research projects at the Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) 2023 Conference on 13 October 2023 in the Concert Hall at TU Dublin, Grangegorman campus. They also shared their insights on "How to Complete an Awesome Final Year Project". Over 300 people, including undergraduate students, recent graduates and staff across the country, attended this conference.

Caitriona and her fellow classmate Daniela Maslovska carried out scientific evaluations on two natural nutraceutical/medicinal products: Cinnamomum cassia and Illicium verum in terms of their chemical profiles and antimicrobial activities impacted by various sustainable extraction methods. Some interesting results were observed and are worth further investigation. The projects were supervised by Dr Tao Zhang and Dr Louise Kearney.

The aim of Thasmin’s project was to optimise the conditions of gold and silver nanoparticle anti-zearalenone antibody conjugates to enhance the shelf-life and performance of lateral flow immunochromatography assay strips. The work was supervised by Dr Furong Tian and Dr Bilal Javed.
