Guest lecture: The Role of European Commission in the Food Safety System in the European Union
On February 20th, students from the Masters of Sustainable Food Safety Management program, undergraduate students from Environmental Health, and lecturers attended an online guest lecture delivered by Dr. Stylianos Koulouris, Legislative Officer at DG SANTE (Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety) of the European Commission. Dr. Koulouris discussed the European Commission’s role in ensuring food safety across the EU, emphasizing collaboration among institutions and stakeholders. Attendees gained valuable insights into EU food law and policy, learning about the comprehensive framework that governs food safety across member states. The lecture provided an in-depth explanation of the legislative processes, compliance requirements, and monitoring mechanisms that work together to maintain high food safety standards. This broader understanding helped participants appreciate the complexity and importance of these regulations in protecting public health and ensuring the integrity of the food supply chain.
