First-Year Pharmacy Technician Students Raise Funds for the Irish Cancer Society
On March 22, 2024, the first-year Pharmacy Technician (TU654) students at TU Dublin organised a successful community-engaged volunteering fundraising event to support the Irish Cancer Society. This event coincided with Daffodil Day, an annual national campaign dedicated to raising funds for the essential services provided by the Irish Cancer Society. The project was part of the students' Professional Development ePortfolio module (PDEP1006), with a focus on Community Engaged Research and Learning (CERL). CERL initiatives aim to connect higher education students with community projects, fostering partnerships that extend beyond the classroom to benefit society. These projects have been implemented globally and studied in various higher education institutions, including the School of Food Science and Environmental Health at TU Dublin, which emphasises community engagement, public health promotion, and social responsibility.
The event took place both on-campus in the Central Quad building on the Grangegorman campus and online. Activities included cancer and public health promotion, raffle prizes, ICS Daffodil pins, raffle tickets, chocolates, treats, cakes, and more. The project successfully raised a total of €729 (€253 in cash and €476 online). The project finance committee ensured that all funds were carefully documented and securely managed.
Congratulations to all first-year Pharmacy Technician students who organised and participated in the successful and meaningful project. Special thanks to Ms. Kathy Young, Lecturer in the School of Food Science and Environmental Health for coordinating the community-engaged volunteering project within the Pharmacy Technician Studies programme in the School.
