Hitika Shah, a Postgraduate Researcher in the School of Food Science and Environmental Health, was invited to the European Youth Energy Day of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW,2022 ) on 26th September in Brussels.

She added that, "In the context of the European Year of Youth, I participated in a policy dialogue with the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, and 11 young representatives from across member states to offer my perspective on how best to meet Europe’s energy targets and what actions must be taken to ensure a sustainable energy future for the next generationThe EUSEW is an annual policy conference to raise awareness on energy efficiency, clean energy and the transformation of the EU energy system. I had the opportunity to discuss the importance of food and energy sustainability with Commissioner Simson, considering the current climate change challenges and the ongoing war in Ukraine. We (12 representatives)  came from different backgrounds and wanted to talk about different aspects of sustainability, for instance, Sustainability in Finance, Taxonomy, Sustainability and climate change. My area of concern was sustainability in the food sector, and I was joined by over 1000 young people (online) to express their views over the issue of food security and energy sustainability in the future. It was a great session with amazing insights and ideas from all the panelists and participants."
