Dr William McCarthy winner of the RIA Kathleen Lonsdale Chemistry Prize
The Kathleen Lonsdale RIA Chemistry Prize 2024 for best PhD thesis in chemical sciences has been announced by the Royal Irish Academy . Dr William McCarthy (Billy) a Teagasc Walsh Fellow and PhD graduate of the School of Food Science and Environmental Health, Technological University Dublin under the supervision of Prof Christine O’Connor and Dr John Tobin, Teagasc Moorepark. The title of Billys thesis was 'The Entry, Partition, and Fate of Chlorates in Dairy Processes'.
During his PhD research Billy worked with relevant Stakeholders, Dairy Farmers and Dairy Processors to shape management strategies to reduce/eliminate chlorate entry into dairy produce. Billys’ PhD has led so far to 8 publications in high impact international journals, 5 of which he is first author. Billy has 113 citations of his papers to date.
Billy is currently a postdoc at the SFI VistaMilk centre in Teagasc Moorepark. Billy will be awarded his prize in the Royal Irish Academy later in the year at a formal prize ceremony. Billy will also go forward as the Irish representative to the IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for Young Chemists
