Driving Sustainability Through Innovation: TU Dublin's Oracle APEX Rapid App Development Hackathon
In a world where technological innovation is increasingly seen as a key driver for sustainable solutions, TU Dublin's School of Enterprise Computing and Digital Transformation spearheaded an inspiring initiative: the Oracle APEX Rapid App Development Hackathon. This event, held at TU Dublin's Tallaght Campus on April 30th 2024, showcased the incredible potential of collaboration, forward-thinking education, and rapid application development (RAD) skills in addressing sustainability challenges.
With a focus on fostering sustainability awareness through innovative technology, the hackathon brought together teams of students ranging from first to third year. Under the guidance and support of industry experts such as Matt Mulvaney from Pretius and Keith Eccles from Oracle Ireland, participants embarked on a five-hour journey of creativity and technical development.
Second Place (presented by Keith Eccles Oracle Ireland) – Senan Carr, Reem Askar, Ibtisam Jaylani Sharif
Supported by the "Embracing Rapid Application Development (RAD) Skills Opportunity as a Catalyst for Employability and Innovation (RAD-Skills)" European project, the event aimed to equip students with practical skills and real-world experience while driving positive change. Matt Mulvaney delivered an insightful skills session, empowering students with the tools needed to translate their ideas into tangible solutions. Meanwhile, Keith Eccles provided valuable guidance as a judge and shared insights into career opportunities in RAD, further inspiring the next generation of tech innovators.
The results were nothing short of extraordinary. Students surpassed all expectations, presenting outstanding sustainability-themed projects that highlighted the transformative power of technology and forward-thinking education. From energy efficiency solutions to waste reduction applications, each project demonstrated a deep commitment to addressing pressing environmental issues.

The success of the hackathon wouldn't have been possible without the support and collaboration of key stakeholders. The Faculty of Computing, Digital and Data at TU Dublin, Oracle, and esteemed European partners, including VILNIUS TECH, TalTech, Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte, and the University of Rijeka, played integral roles in making the event a resounding success.
