Launch of PROFESS 12 Engineering Education Project
PROFESS 12 - PROFessional Skills for Engineering Students – Summer School to Achieve SDG 12
TU Dublin along with Ulster University have launched the PROFESS 12 project which is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) through the North South Research Programme. PROFESS 12 (PROFessional Skills for Engineering Students – Summer School to Achieve SDG 12) will be led by Dr Una Beagon from the School of Transport and Civil Engineering and Professor Brian Bowe and Ruchita Jani from TU Dublin along with Professor Margaret Morgan from Ulster University’s School of Engineering.
PROFESS 12 aims to explore and develop the professional skills required of engineering students to meet SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) with specific focus on the island of Ireland. An innovative summer school will be conducted as a part of this project which will provide students with an experience that will help them develop the necessary intercultural skills to deliver on SDG commitments.
The summer school is aimed at engineering students from TU Dublin and Ulster University and will be launched on 4th March 2023 to celebrate World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.
UNESCO’s framework for design of inclusive engineering programs (Mills, Ayre and Gill, 2011) along with the toolbox for intercultural learning and internationalisation (http://intercultural-learning.eu/toolbox/) will be used as an inspiration to constitute the summer school which will include students from both the north and south of Ireland.
The expected outcome of this project will help students and other stakeholders get a better understanding of the professional and intercultural skills required to be included in engineering education and how they can be incorporated in their engineering programmes so that they can all make a significant contribution in achieving SDG 12.
