What's Your Bright Idea Competition
The TU Dublin School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, based at its Grangegorman campus, hosted its inaugral Kirby sponsored event on 4 May 2022. The energy focussed – ‘What’s Your Bright Idea Competition’ sought ‘ideas’ to get people to improve the sustainability of the way we live, our towns or cities; ideas to engage society with sustainable thinking or living, renewable energy or reduction of energy use. The competition’s sponsors, Kirby, offered two scholarships, each worth €3000, to the top two submissions.
The short-listed candidates, from 1st to final year engineering programmes, presented their ideas to an esteemed judging panel comprising of Jennifer Boyer (VP Sustainability, TU Dublin), Dr. Emma Robinson (Programme Chair MSc. Energy Management), Amy Lane (Electrical Engineering Manager, Kirby Engineering & Construction), Liam Donohoe (Programme Chair (BSc. Electrical Services & Energy Management) and Mark Geraghty (Grangegorman Campus Estates Manager).
The short-listed candidates and their presentations were:
Maurice Dowling-who presented on opportunities for hydrogen-powered cars.
Nikita Lagutins-who presented on mitigating global warming effects through CO2 reduction through the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to track embodied carbon.
Leo Traynor-who presented on Reducing CO2 through the use of Hydrogen based Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) as an alternative to coke in steel manufacture, and
Burdain Abdulkreem-who presented on the opportunities for used E.V. batteries’ in the Built Environment.
Patrick Reid, representing Kirby, congratulated the participants for their entries and welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with the School. In summing up, Jennifer Boyer commended all participants on some very novel thinking – with some truly inspiring and cogent presentations. Jennifer announced the winners as Burdain Abdulkreem and Nikita Lagutins.
The School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering would sincerely like to congratulate all participants, their very generous sponsors, Kirby, and the judging panel for an excellent event that was well supported by students and staff.
