Summer School in Sustainable Transport & Mobility - June 2022

Published: 20 Jun, 2022

Every year, TU Dublin Environment & Planning runs an intensive but exciting hands-on 3-4 day Summer School in Sustainable Transport, led by Dr. Sarah Rock and supported by Glenn Hingerty. This year’s theme was ‘Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and Urban Regeneration’ with Cabra in Dublin chosen as the project area. Reflecting the multi-disciplinary nature of our programmes, the Masters of Sustainable Transport & Mobility students worked together with Masters of Urban Regeneration and Development students, and partnered with Dublin City Council, the National Transport Authority and the Connecting Cabra community group to explore the potential of reducing the impact of increasing traffic and car ownership on the safety, vitality and liveability of the neighbourhood of Cabra.

This highly engaged project saw the students work with many stakeholders in the area including public and community representatives, government agencies, and business owners to develop ideas for the future of Cabra, drawing on lessons from the ‘Garden Suburb’ inspired planning that Cabra was originally designed to in the 1920-1930s. Students worked on ideas to restore the once lively streets of Cabra to its community. They identified a number of pathfinder projects that could be the catalyst for sustained improvement and investment in the area, including:

The students also presented their ideas at the Connecting Cabra Energy Information & Sustainability Community Event in Christ the King Community Hall on Saturday 8th October, 2022.
