Cygnum Awards 2023
In October 2023 construction industry leaders #Cygnum Timber Frame returned to #TUDublin #BoltonStreet for the second time to confer the Cygnum Awards. The awards are for academic excellence in a timber construction-related projects or dissertations by students studying Timber Technology, Architectural Technology and Structural Engineering. Generously, a parchment and a grant of €1,000 are provided by Cygnum to each winner.
At the heart of the Awards (created by Cygnum management with the School of Architecture, Building and Environment in 2021) is the recognition that (a) high-quality timber buildings are always created by close cross-disciplinary engagement and (b) the recognition and celebration of academic excellence encourages engagement by students, lecturers and researchers in the development of skills and knowledge crucial to the national shift towards #timbereducation, #biomaterials, #circularity and more #sustainable ways of building.
We are delighted to announce that the winners for 2022-23 are:
- Nigel Smyth,Year 3 of TU838 BSc Sustainable Timber Technology (SABE), for his evaluation and proposed improvement of a timber factory production line;
- Szymon Grabowski, Class of 23 of TU831 BSc Architectural Technology (SABE), for his life cycle assessment of cross-laminated (#CLT) #masstimber construction;
- Kate Ballance, Class of 23 of TU824 B.E. Structural Engineering (STCE), for her structural analysis of the benefits of synthetic fibre reinforcement to glue-laminated (#glulam) beams.
