Overview - new Micro-credential Course in Planning and Design for Active Travel
The Certificate in Planning and Design for Active Travel is a 5-Credit professional development (micro-credential) module delivered jointly by the School of Transport & Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture Building and Environment, both part of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at TU Dublin.
The aim of the module is to allow students to develop the necessary skills to identify the most applicable approaches to design, appraisal and implementation of active travel infrastructure within a variety of urban and rural contexts.
The module provides a grounding in advanced theory, implementation, design, practical applications, and legislative & planning frameworks around Active Travel infrastructure.
The module will introduce case studies and expose students to active evaluation of active travel projects. The module will demonstrate how Active Travel can play a central role in a sustainable mobility framework.
The module is suited to individuals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds and who may be involved in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of Active Travel Infrastructure.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module the learner will be able to:
- Identify the appropriate Key Legislative Frameworks and Mechanisms for a given Active Travel Infrastructure scheme
- Evaluate Active Travel Infrastructure schemes in a given context
- Plan the Design, Implementation and Maintenance stages for a given Active Travel Infrastructure scheme
- Critically discuss the challenges of integrating the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems design together with the design of Active Travel infrastructure
- Identify potential biases inherent in mobility infrastructure design and, challenges for promoting inclusion and equity in Active Travel modes
- Identify Safety and Security Issues in Active Travel design
- Critically discuss Design Approaches and Philosophies for Active Travel
- Contribute to the planning and design of sustainable and integrated active travel networks at different scales and contexts
Minimum Entry Requirements
Entrance to the course is normally contingent on:
- An appropriate honours (minimum 2.2 grade) degree;
- An ability to demonstrate current professional practice OR a minimum of three years’ experience in transport planning or a related discipline will be considered an advantage.

Progression
This module is delivered as part of the TU226 MSc in Sustainable Transport & Mobility.
Schedule and Time Commitment
Classes take place on Fridays from 9.30am – 5pm in Bolton Street over a 6-week period. Module delivery will encompass lectures, practicals, and site visits. The module is examined using group and individual Assessments.
