Cabra, Cabra, Hey! TU Students support Connecting Cabra Energy and Sustainability Event

Published: 14 Oct, 2022

Postgraduate students of the TU226 MSc in Sustainable Transport and Mobility and the TU228 MSc in Urban Regeneration and Development participated in the Connecting Cabra Energy Information and Sustainability Event on Saturday 8th October at Christ the King Community Hall, Cabra, Dublin 7.  The students presented project work from their Summer School in Sustainable Transport and Mobility module, which was coordinated by Lecturer Sarah Rock.

TU228 student Barry McNamara and TU226 student Michael Griffin attended a stand where the student project material was displayed and discussed.  The project focused on planning and design for Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in Cabra.  Students collaborated extensively with local stakeholders in the preparation of their plans, including with Gaeilscoil Bharra, a primary school with strong connections to the local area.

The student project, titled "Cabra, Cabra, Hey! - A Low Traffic Neighbourhood and Regeneration Plan", seeks to reimagine Cabra as a liveable, sustainable and healthy community.  The project includes ideas for "low traffic neighbourhoods" and Mobility & Regeneration Plans for Cabra East and Cabra West.  Integrated and landscaped concepts for healthier and more active streets around the Fassaugh Avenue and the 17 Shops areas were proposed.

The Connecting Cabra Energy Information and Sustainability Event was organised by @ConnectingCabra to provide information about energy saving measures, and for members of the community to meet with experts in renewable energy, home insulation and sustainable mobility.  The Connecting Cabra initiative is supported by the SEAI Sustainable Communities programme, CODEMA Dublin's Energy Agency and TU Dublin Campus Life.

The Summer School in Sustainable Transport and Mobility module is coordinated by Lecturer Sarah Rock with the support of Lecturer Glenn Hingerty.   The module facilitates students from multi-disciplinary backgrounds to engage with public agencies and community organisations on a contemporary transport and mobility issue with which they are both faced.

The students' stand received positive reactions and was also attended by Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Caroline Conroy.

Local Green Party representative, Neasa Hourican TD (also involved in the Connecting Cabra initiative) tweeted about the student project: https://twitter.com/neasa_neasa/status/1578795025961394177
