School of Mathematics & Statistics celebrates Mathsweek 2024
Mathsweek came to TU Dublin once again this week. The School of Mathematics & Statistics continued its decades-long association with Mathsweek by hosting school children from several schools on our Grangegorman campus.
The students came from O'Connell Secondary School, Mount Carmel Secondary School and Mercy Secondary School and had an opportunity to engage in puzzles, games and activities with members of the School of Mathematics & Statistics in the beautiful surroundings of St Laurence's church on our modern Grangegorman campus. In particular, visitors had the opportunity to discover how mathematics and art can collide in the context of facial recognition.
Fun and engaging talks were provided by Tiago Hirth on Wednesday 16 October and Pablo Torres on Friday 18 October which enthralled the audience. The events, which take place nationwide, clearly demonstrate that mathematics is for everyone, mathematics is an important part of our everyday lives and, most of all, mathematics is fun!
We hope that many of the budding mathematicians will continue to develop their interest in mathematics, perhaps studying it at college and providing the mathematical skills and solutions needed for future generations. The School is very grateful for the ongoing partnership with the Mathsweek team who coordinated another immensely successful week across the country and thanks all the students who came to visit.
Thank you in particular to Aisling McGlinchey, Rebecca Brady, Wasi Ur Rehman Khan, Maged Shaban, Lauren Matthews, Conor Curtin, Deeba Javadpour, John Butler, Cormac Breen, Ciaran O'Sullivan, Gaia Sessa and Stephen Martin who helped on the day.
