School hosts another fun-packed Mathsweek
Every year the School of Mathematics & Statistics hosts events to promote mathematics and encourage the public to get involved in Mathsweek. This year was no different with events for school children happening on our city-centre, Grangegorman location.
This year Mathsweek took place across Ireland from 14 October to 22 October. Mathsweek has an eighteen-year history of encouraging everyone to engage with mathematics, see the mathematics in the world around them, better understand the importance and usefulness of mathematics (without which, life as we know it would be very different!) and, most of all, have fun. Throughout that journey, TU Dublin and its predecessor institutions have played an active role in promoting and encouraging children to get involved. Almost half a million children signed up to take part this year and the School of Mathematics & Statistics hosted events on Monday 16 October and Wednesday 18 October on its easily-accessible, state-of-the-art campus in Grangegorman.
At these events were school children from O'Connell School (North Richmond Street), CBS Westland Row, CBS Synge Street, and CBS James St. Over 100 students attended the events, playing games, learning about mathematics, mathematical problem solving and even doing some tricks.
Once again, the School was delighted to be joined by two guest speakers: Kjartan Poskitt (author of the Murderous Maths series of books) and Andrew Jeffrey.
The School would like to thank all the schools that got involved, the TU Dublin access office for assisting and, particularly importantly, its own academic staff, including Cormac Breen, Damian Bruce, John Butler, Joe Condon, Fiona Murray, Meged Shaban, Lauren Matthews and Rebecca Brady, without whose enthusiasm and participation the events would not be possible. Aisling McGlinchey organised the event and is the Mathematics Engagement Coordinator for the School.
