Open days and maths talks
TU Dublin held its open days across its campuses. In particular, the School of Mathematics & Statistics was in Central Quad on Saturday 13 April to welcome young people who had expressed an interest through the CAO process in studying at TU Dublin. It was a lively day with music and atmosphere where prospective students and their families got the opportunity to see the fabulous modern facilities on our Grangegorman campus and had the chance to talk to staff and current students about their courses and the experience of being a student as part of one of the biggest universities in Ireland. We hope to see many of the young people we spoke to on Saturday in September when they join the new cohort of students embarking on the School's full-time undergraduate programme, TU874 Mathematical Sciences, and take their first steps toward their degrees and ultimately their careers in one of the many sectors in which mathematicians are in constant high demand.
Dr John Butler, a lecturer in the School of Mathematics & Statistics has also continued his series of outreach talks designed to bring the fascinating beauty, power and applications of mathematics and statistics to a young audience. Recently he captivated an audience of 5th and 6th class school children at the D7 Educate Together School with his talk entitled: Don’t get eaten by the Tiger: Connecting Neuroscience and Machine Learning. This will be followed by Connecting the Brain to Machine Learning and Back Again at the SciFest activities on the Grangegorman campus on 3 May. Mathematics and Statistics are everywhere and are becoming increasingly important to technology and development as we understand the mathematics behind the data and modelling.
