New look Maths Eyes website released
The School of Mathematics & Statistics is delighted to support the new-look Maths Eyes website. A fabulous resource for everyone and anyone, full of fabulous, useful (and sometimes surprising) resources and images.
The "Have you got Maths Eyes?" initiative is a ground-breaking project designed to enable people of any age to discover the maths that is all around them and that they use every day. It has grown steadily since the concept for the project was developed by Terry Maguire in 2003 as part of her research. Ciaran O'Sullivan from the School of Mathematics & Statistics, TU Dublin has been instrumental in the project from its very initial days, including developing with colleagues the ‘Looking at Tallaght with Maths Eyes’ initiative in 2011, part of the 18th International Conference Adult Learning Mathematics.
The Maths Eyes project continues to be overseen by Terry Maguire, Ciaran O’Sullivan and Eoin Gill and Sheila Donegan from MathsWeek Ireland. Its aim is to highlight the connections that exist everywhere between maths and the real world and to build individuals' confidence in their own knowledge and use of maths, opening the gateway for them to improve their maths confidence and skills.
The MathsEyes website is an important virtual resource centre for the project and has recently undergone a facelift. The website provides useful tools and resources to help individuals, schools and communities to look at familiar things in their environments and see that mathematics is all around them. The website includes pictures, posters and visual problems, showcasing mathematical concepts such as measurement, geometry, and patterns. It also runs competitions for different age categories and provides opportunities for participants to win prizes. It is a must-visit resource for teachers, students, and parents, as well as adult learners who want to develop their maths skills.
Most of all, Maths Eyes is fun! Please take the time to visit.
