Mathematics to the fore at Pint of Science

Published: 11 May, 2022

Dr Nicole Beisiegel, a Lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences, organised and hosted the sold-out event, “Understanding Our Brain“ on Wednesday 11th of May 2022 as part of the Pint of Science Festival 2022.

The Pint of Science Festival took place from May 9-11, 2022 with many events taking place all over Ireland. The idea behind Pint of Science is to bring researchers to the pub to share a pint of their science with the audience. For the third year in a row, the School of Mathematical Sciences was pivotal in promoting and organising the TU Dublin Pint of Science event. “Understanding Our Brain“, organised in Chaplin's bar by Dr Nicole Beisiegel, showcased the breadth of research being undertaken in TU Dublin to improve our current understanding of the brain: from psychology to mathematical modelling.

There were three speakers from TU Dublin and live music. The first speaker was Rebecca Brady, a PhD researcher in the School of Mathematical Sciences, who presented some of her current work on modelling “The Sensory Brain and How We Perceive Our World”. The second speaker was Angelo Simoes from the Centre for Psychology, Education and Emotional Intelligence at TU Dublin's Blanchardstown campus who spoke about his work on “The Smart Hearts Lab – The Future of Emotion Coachers” and how he teaches teenagers to improve their dealing with emotions. This was followed by live music by local musician Chris who captured the audience with his unique interpretations of popular songs. The final speaker of the night was Dr John Butler, Lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences, who spoke about the “Mathematics of Deciding” and illustrated complex neural networks with the very fitting question of deciding whether to have another drink or not. The event was a great success and a very enjoyable evening with many interesting questions and discussions throughout the evening.
