Mathematics student wins Hamilton Prize 2024
We are proud to celebrate that top mathematician and student of our BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences, Mateusz Mroczkowski, received the 2024 Hamilton Prize in Mathematics for TU Dublin from the Royal Irish Academy at a ceremony at Academy House on 16 October 2024.
Mateusz Mroczkowski is now in the fourth and final year of his programme, TU874 BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences in the School of Mathematics & Statistics. The undergraduate Hamilton Prize is a prestigious award given annually by RIA to the top undergraduates in mathematics in the penultimate year of their studies in each of the universities in Ireland and which marks the anniversary of famed Irish scientist William Rowan Hamilton’s discovery of quaternion algebra on 16 October 1843. Mateusz received the award from Professor Laura De Marco, Harvard University, who also provided an exclusive masterclass for all recipients and delivered the public Hamilton Lecture later that evening. Hamilton Day continues to be sponsored by Ibec.
The School is extremely proud of Mateusz who exemplifies the strength of our Mathematical Sciences degree and the wealth of mathematical talent in Ireland. Professor Pat Guiry, President of the Royal Irish Academy said:
Although we look to the past to commemorate Hamilton’s achievements, this event is also an opportunity to look to the future and to recognise the next generation of great Irish mathematicians.
Mateusz is definitely one of that next generation of researchers, innovators and problem solvers.
The Head of School of Mathematics & Statistics at TU Dublin, Dr Chris Hills, said:
Mateusz is a very deserved winner of this prestigious prize. He is an excellent mathematician who has given so much to his programme at TU Dublin.
The Hamilton Prize is recognition of Mateusz's talent and hard work and the BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences has equipped him with the skills to enter research or to embark on a wide range of careers where he has the capacity to make an impact on a global stage, applying advanced mathematics and problem-solving methodologies to address the challenges faced by business and modern employment sectors.
We wish Mateusz the very best for the future and will be following his future career with interest.
The School would like to thank Ibec for sponsoring the prize and RIA for its continued support for mathematics.
