Mathematics student wins Hamilton Prize 2023
Dara Vince received the 2023 Hamilton Prize in Mathematics for TU Dublin from the Royal Irish Academy at a ceremony at Academy House on 16 October 2023.
The Hamilton Prize is a prestigious award presented annually by the Royal Irish Academy to the best mathematicians now entering the final year of their studies at an Irish University. The prize recognises the next generation of highly-talented mathematicians and the huge contribution that they will make in the future. It is, therefore, very fitting that the Hamilton Prize is awarded each year on the anniversary of William Rowan Hamilton’s discovery of quaternion algebra in 1843. Hamilton was an Irish mathematician whose work and discoveries have had, and continue to have, immense and wide-ranging implications for our use and understanding of technology, mathematics and physics today.
The School of Mathematics & Statistics is immensely proud of Dara Vince, a student of TU874 BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences, for winning this award. He is one of many very talented mathematicians and statisticians studying at TU Dublin, supported by dedicated and expert lecturers, who will no doubt make their own significant contributions to scholarship, business and industry in Ireland and abroad in the future.
The Head of School, Dr Chris Hills, said
We are delighted for Dara and this recognition of his hard work and talent. Mathematics is everywhere. It is fundamental to our understanding of the world and key to solving the global problems and challenges we face. We wish Dara the very best for the future and look forward to following his progress and seeing the impact he will no doubt make.
The School would like to thank Ibec for sponsoring the prize and RIA's for its continued support for mathematics.
