Patricia Magee received her MSc in 1995 from Dublin City University, under the patronage of the Centre for Software Engineering. Patricia worked as a research officer for the Centre for Teaching at DCU from 1995 to 1997.
She joined the lecturing team in the Computer Applications department at DCU in 1997 and worked there until 1999. In September 1999 she took up a new role as a lecturer in the Computing department in TU Dublin (Tallaght campus) formerly known as IT Tallaght.
Patricia has taught various modules over the years including Software Development in languages such as Java and Python, Database Management Systems and Web Development using the Play and Django frameworks.
Patricia also acts as class tutor for 1st year Computing students. In this role she is a point of contact for students in the class who may have concerns around absence due to illness, academic issues, special learning needs etc. Continuous monitoring of attendance & performance to done during the year to identify students ‘at risk’ as early as possible.
Patricia has conducted research in the E-learning area and was involved in a European research project to investigate the key problem areas facing learners of computer programming at introductory level and to develop an innovative learning tool to address these areas of difficulty. An in-depth cross institution evaluation of the educational effectiveness of the Learning Objects (LOs) was also conducted.
Patricia also supervised MSc research in this area and in particular the use of ontologies/matching techniques in automated correction.
