International Women's Day - Women in Tech Event
Students, alumni and staff from the B.Sc. in Business Computing and B.Sc. in Business Analytics celebrated International Women’s Day on 8th March with a coffee event in the TU Dublin GROWTHhub ideation lab in Aungier Street. This event was part of a series of University-wide events organised by WITU (Women in Technology United) to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event was supported by the School of Business Technology, Retail and Supply Chain. Past graduates were invited back to speak with female technology students over coffee and pastries and the theme of this year's event was #EmbraceEquity.
At the event lecturer, Farrah Higgins, spoke of the opportunities available to the students, from industry-sponsored scholarships, third-year internship opportunities to international competitions such as European Innovation Academy (EIA) and World Skills. Third-year Business Computing student, Dahab Sharaby, spoke about her volunteer role as a lead mentor with TeenTurn. TeenTurn provides teen girls the opportunity to gain hands-on STEM experience and the support they need to acquire qualifications and jobs in the Tech sector. Past graduate, Claire Farrell, spoke about her career journey from her B.Sc. in Business Analytics to her current Software Engineering role with General Motors. Alumni, Aleksandra Leonova, spoke about the opportunities that the B.Sc. in Business Computing opened to her for her current role as a Quality Assurance engineer at Toast.
All speakers highlighted co-curricular activities, such as CodeFirstGirls and international competitions like EIA, World Skills and CaseIT, as incredible opportunities supported by TU Dublin. The event was a lovely, relaxed atmosphere and great to see the next generation of tech women networking and connecting with our past graduates. We would like to thank all our female alumni and students for taking part in this event and for sharing their inspirational stories.
