Gerard has been involved in retention and promotion Initiatives for two decades, serving as Year One Tutor on the Tallaght campus. His leadership extends to institutional governance, notably as a member of the Governing Body. In 2017, Gerard was appointed to the Joint Governing Body Strategy Steering Group, where he played a key role in the formation of TU Dublin. Gerard continues to lecture in Critical Skills Development, Finance and Economics. His creative contributions to the Behavioural Economics and Personal Finance modules reflects his expertise and curricular innovation..

Gerard's pedagogical interests are rooted in student-centred learning, teaching innovation, and impactful assessment practices. His commitment to fostering academic excellence and student engagement was recognised in 2014 when he was presented with the “National Teaching Hero” Award. He developed "Augmented Automated Excel Spreadsheets" (AAES), a tool designed to streamline the marking process, which reduces administrative workload, improves productivity, and delivers enriched feedback to students. His work reflects deep engagement with enhancing teaching practices.

Gerard is a member of the Irish Economic Association and trustee to the Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC) Scheme for members of the TUI . He also lectures in Property Economics on the Higher Certificate in Real Estate, Valuation, Sale & Management developed with the Institute of Professional Auctioneers & Valuers.
