Gene Carolan is a Lecturer in Law, and programme chair of the full-time undergraduate LLB programme. He teaches European Human Rights Law and Immigration, Refugee & Citizenship Law on the undergraduate and postgraduate Law programmes at TU Dublin.
Dr. Carolan's research interests lie in peace agreements, peace-building institutions, and transitional justice. His research has previously been the subject of an EJ Phelan Fellowship from the National University of Ireland, and a John & Pat Hume Scholarship from Maynooth University. For his research on the use of video-games in the classroom, Dr. Carolan has also received a Charlemont Grant from the Royal Irish Academy, and funding from TU Dublin IMPACT.
In 2020, Dr. Carolan was awarded a TU Dublin Researcher Award to supervise a PhD project on inhumane treatment in Ireland's system of Direct Provision. He welcomes research proposals in the fields of European human rights, refugee law, and international humanitarian law.
Prior to his academic career, Gene served as a Parliamentary Assistant to two Senators of the Irish Houses of Oireachtas, and conducted research on children’s rights in support of the Council of Europe’s One in Five campaign. He has previously received a Certificate in Mediation from the European Security and Defence College, and has presented aspects of his research to EU personnel working on military and diplomatic missions tied to the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy.
