Profile
Tim is a Lecturer in the School of Media on the Grangegorman Campus. He teaches primarily on the BA Photography course. Subjects taught include all aspects of photo practice including project development, studio, film and darkroom, digital printing, documentary, large format, lighting, photoshop, as well as business studies.
Tim's research in education is based on an ethos of practice-based learning and greater student choice. One example was the article "Why 3rd Level should be more like Montessori School." He has taught workshops on "Creativity in Education." Outside of photography, Tim has taught 3rd level courses on Sustainability in Business and Business Ethics.
Tim's current photographic work explores the tension between human experience and the natural world. This includes his projects "The Tree," based around a 200-year-old beech tree, and "Greener than You," which looks at everyday consumer products and the life cycle of materials. Tim was a commercial photographer for many years and was production manager of a photo lab.
His current research interest looks at how photographic images are used as data in various disciplines from social sciences and STEM fields. Tim wants to see more collaboration across disciplines.
Tim has an MSc in Digital Media from Trinity College and an MSc in Sustainable Development from the Dublin Institute of Technology, the previous incarnation of TU Dublin. Tim did his undergraduate study at New College of Florida, the Honours Liberal Arts college in the state.
